Position Description:
Our client is looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer for a position located in Richmond, VA.  The Mechanical Design Engineer (hereafter referred to as Engineer) is expected to evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering and design techniques. Tasks will have clear and specified objectives but will require the investigation of some variables to provide a design that will meet stated objectives. The incumbent is also required to meet design milestones.  Documentation of each phase of the design project is required and may be transmitted to the customer.  Technical competence is necessary for the incumbent to apply current technology to meet the project objectives.  The Engineer will be required to review the details of each completed task to ensure that his/her work and the work completed under their direction is error free.
This position requires advanced learning and exercises judgment in the performance of the position objectives.  The Engineer must optimize solutions through the evaluation and analysis of varied alternatives.  The position requires working with a variety of industries, clients, and technical issues.
Required Education: 
1.  Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent
2.  AutoCAD, Inventor, Solidworks or other computer aided design experience training
3.  Requisite years of experience in industrial environment
Tasks, Duties, Roles & Expectations:
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, or computer-generated reports.
  • Develop and test models of alternate designs and processing methods to assess feasibility, operating condition effects, possible new applications and necessity of modification.
  • Conduct research that tests or analyzes the feasibility, design, operation, or performance of equipment, components, or systems.
  • Specify system components or direct modification of products to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance specifications.
  • Confer with engineers or other personnel to implement operating procedures, resolve system malfunctions, or provide technical information.
  • Recommend design modifications to eliminate machine or system malfunctions.
  • Research, design, evaluate, install, operate, and maintain mechanical products, equipment, systems and processes to meet requirements, applying knowledge of engineering principles.
  • Assist drafters in developing the structural design of products using drafting tools or computer-assisted design (CAD) or drafting equipment and software.
  • Develop, coordinate, or monitor all aspects of production, including selection of manufacturing methods, fabrication, or operation of product designs.
  • Research and analyze customer design proposals, specifications, manuals, or other data to evaluate the feasibility, cost, or maintenance requirements of designs or applications.
  • Write performance requirements for product development or engineering projects.
  • Investigate equipment failures and difficulties to diagnose faulty operation, and to make recommendations to maintenance crew.
  • Study industrial processes to determine where and how application of equipment can be made.
  • Provide feedback to design engineers on customer problems or needs.
  • Perform personnel functions such as supervision of production workers, technicians, technologists and other engineers, or design of evaluation programs.
  • Oversee installation, operation, maintenance, or repair to ensure that machines or equipment are installed and functioning according to specifications.
  • Design test control apparatus or equipment or develop procedures for testing products.
  • Establish or coordinate the maintenance or safety procedures, service schedule, or supply of materials required to maintain machines or equipment in the prescribed condition.
  • Estimate costs and submit bids for engineering, construction, or extraction projects, and prepare contract documents.
  • Solicit new business and provide technical customer service.
  • Apply engineering principles or practices to emerging fields, such as robotics, waste management, or biomedical engineering.
Describe the Supervision the Incumbent Receives from a Superior:
The Engineer will be the lead on most projects; however, on specific projects may receive specific instruction on tasks from a project manager, project engineer or lead engineer.  Direction shall be given as to design approach.  Assistance is furnished on problems and work will be reviewed for application of sound professional judgment.
Describe the Supervision the Job Incumbent Exercises Over Subordinates:
The Engineer will be required to supervise or coordinate the work of designers and draftspersons for tasks under his/her design direction.  The incumbent will be responsible for the quality, work direction, and timeliness of others work for tasks under his/her design direction.
Employee Safety Responsibility:
  • The Engineer is required to obey safety rules and to exercise caution in all work activities and is responsible for immediately reporting any unsafe condition or “near miss” incident.
  • In the case of accidents that result in injury, regardless of how insignificant the injury may appear, the incumbent should immediately notify the EHS Manager or the appropriate supervisor.

  • The incumbent must be able to maintain the quality of the design in order to provide the customer with a design that is error free.
  • The incumbent must be able to consider safety in every phase of their design. He/she must meet all design safety requirements such as NEC, BOCA, NESC, customer requirements and governmental regulations.
  • The incumbent must be able to coordinate the work of other and be able to also work well with others.
  • Overtime is sometimes required to meet the design objectives on a project.

A total of 80% of available hours should be devoted to work that is billable to our clients.
