Enterprise Data Warehouse Manager

Position Title: Enterprise Data Warehouse Manager
Location: Birmingham, AL
Position Status: Full Time

Position Description:
Our client is looking for Enterprise Data Warehouse Manager candidates for a position located in Birmingham, AL.  The Enterprise Data Warehouse Manager will focus on the timely completion of projects and initiatives for the EDW Development Team.  This role will be responsible for overseeing projects involving reports and/or visual analytics.

The manager architect will:
  • Manage, mentor, and oversee 6-10 EDW developers. 
  • Oversee the creation and development of complex Oracle stored procedures and ensure that standards and data capturing methods are followed across the team’s body of work. 
  • Oversee the development of BusinessObjects reports as well as Tableau dashboards.
  • Independently employ a broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures in data warehousing including the standardization and optimization of development practices regarding data within the health system. 
  • Ensure that the highest standards of data quality and data validation in their pertinent projects.
  • Commit to fostering an environment of heightened security following Information Technology Security Policies and participating in security training, such as HIPAA and Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) on an annual basis.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Ensure that their team is adhering to the best business intelligence practices of development for by the Enterprise Data Warehouse.  This includes conducting technical reviews of team member’s code (PL/SQL) and collaboration with the team’s architects.
  • Develop processes that streamline the various project streams as well as the communication.
  • Coordinate team activities surrounding system upgrades with the EDW Admin Manager.  This includes creating test scripts, data validation, and communication inside and outside HSIS.
  • Make assignments to team members and oversee their execution while maintaining a productive and healthy work environment.
  • Track project hours among team members ensuring that time and labor are monitored throughout the life cycle of said project.
  • Ensure that projects are thoroughly documented and tasks assigned in an even manner across the development team.
  • Mentor team members on software development principles and oversee code reviews as needed
  • Collaborate with project management staff, inside and outside the EDW, in relevant projects to ensure goals are agreed upon and met according to EDW standards.
  • Communicate regularly with customers ensuring their needs are met.  Ensure that issues are addressed in a prompt manner as well as subsequent solutions.
  • Communicate with leadership throughout the health system to manage expectations and possibilities throughout a project’s life cycle.
  • Keep up to speed with the evolving data landscape, relevant tools, and trends surrounding software development.

Required Education/Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems or a related field and eight (8) years of related experience required.  Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Required Skills:
  • Experience in a data centered environment working to ensure that the organization’s data needs are met regarding project development and maintenance.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience developing complex PL/SQL stored procedures with a firm understanding of performance tuning in an Oracle environment.
  • Experience with developing data models using the concepts of normalization and scalability
  • Thorough understanding of data warehouse methodologies surrounding ELT, ETL and their associated technologies.
  • Minimum 3 years’ Development experience with a business intelligence tool, preferably BusinessObjects.  This includes knowledge of the relationships in the metadata layer(s) as well as report creation and distribution mechanisms.
  • Minimum 2 years’ Experience with a visual analytics tool developing complex dashboards, preferable Tableau. Have the ability to convey to developers how metrics should be displayed in said tools.
  • Experience working with external vendors to ensure optimum results are achieved regarding possible new software tool acquisitions.
  • Provide career development options to staff ensuring that each individual has the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills relevant to data warehousing.  Provide mentoring where necessary.

Desired Skills:
  • Clinical data management experience a plus
  • Familiarity or experience managing small to medium size projects a plus.
